Updated: James Cameron joins Mountains of Madness...

I'm not sure what to make of this, but according to Deadline.com, Avatar director James Cameron will produce (along with Susan Montford and Don Murphy) Guillermo del Toro's 3D (yes, 3D) adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. I've been unable to verify the news on any other horror site, so until I do (see below!), we'll file this one under rumour...

Update: Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider has just broke this story as well, so things are looking up! I've also been informed that Deadline.com, a website that I was unfamiliar with, is a highly respected site that confirms their information before posting...

Update: Bloody-disgusting.com, Shocktillyoudrop.com, the
Los Angeles Times and Ain't It Cool News have all sourced the Deadline.com article...

Update: News of del Toro's dream project is spreading like Madness across the web with
MTV Movies Blog, New York Magazine, Collider.com, JoBlo.com, ComingSoon.net and horror-movies.ca, Dark Horizons, Dread Central, sf-fantasy.suvudu.com (who mention the wonderful audio recordings of Julia Morgan or MorganScorpion to readers of Unfilmable.com), FEARnet, /Film and fangoria.com (and literally dozens more) all running with the story...

According to the various sites reporting,
pre-production could begin in the coming weeks, with filming to begin as early as the first quarter of 2011. Screenplay re-writes are currently underway...

This could very likely be the story of the year, so watch this space for more!

Exclusive images from Whisperer in Darkness...

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society's Sean Branney passed along a couple of behind-the-scenes images from their highly anticipated adaptation of The Whisperer in Darkness! The first image shows Director of Photography David Robertson lighting a miniature set and the second shows Dave Snyder touching up Charles Fort's makeup (played by the HPLHS's own Andrew Leman)...

Further shooting is scheduled for this weekend including miniatures and inserts, and Sean tells Unfilmable.com that they are getting very close...

Summoning Doctor Glamour...

Pre-production has begun on Never Knows Best Productions' follow-up to Frank DanCoolo, a live-action short called Doctor Glamour! Little is know of the film besides the official synopsis below, but if you hit the Never Knows Best production blog, you can see an early VFX test that hints of things to come...

Synopsis: Peerless science student Walter Gilman meets his match in Eve Walpurgis and promptly falls in love. But when Eve is taken by an extra dimensional terror, Walter is forced to summon a demon of his own: the anachronistic DOCTOR GLAMOUR!

From the team that brought you "Frank DanCoolo: Paranormal Drug Dealer" comes an even more outrageous sci-fi comedy. With mind-melting special effects, sexy sharp humor and a slew of hard hitting proto-punk musical numbers, DOCTOR GLAMOUR will bad touch your funny bone!

Updated: Lovecraft joins The Gathering...

The Gathering, a project we first mentioned here, looks to be moving forward according to a report by fangoria.com! The horror anthology has already amassed an amazing cast including William Sadler, Doug Bradley and Udo Kier even though production isn't set to go until late 2010 or early 2011...

Other actors already cast include Bill Moseley, Danielle Harris, Clint Howard, David Naughton (who is reportedly playing the role of H.P. Lovecraft), Billy Drago, Larry Fessenden, Debbie Rochon, Adrienne King, Brian O’Halloran, Lin Shaye, Ellen Sandweiss, Brinke Stevens and Kiowa Gordon, with Robert Englund and Linda Blair in discussions to join. Jeffrey Combs was being considered for the role of Edgar Allan Poe at one point, but there was no mention of his involvement in the recent article...

The framing story (The Storytellers) for The Gathering, to be directed by Jon Keeyes and written by Carl Kirshner, is set on Halloween night and revolves around the devil, who brings together Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft and Mary Shelley, to share their most frightening untold tales. The winner, chosen by the devil, receives the ultimate prize: the chance to leave purgatory forever...

Final casting and financing are currently underway, so watch this space for updates! Meanwhile, head over to fangoria.com for more...

Update: Dread Central reports that Danielle Harris has not been cast in this project, as previously reported...

Roe teaser online...

A teaser trailer for Roe (formerly known as Bait), v.g.c. films follow-up to The Picture in the House, has been released, and you can check it out below! Written and directed by Christopher James Jordan (from a story by Jorday, Gary Lobstein and Julie Wilhelm), the film stars Joe Hanrahan and Paul Russell...

About the film: What is calling to Earl, the town vagrant of a rural fishing community? Curiosity? Greed? Lust? Or is it something more ethereal that draws him back to the lake over the hill? Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, 'Roe' is a surreal, visceral tale of terror and paranoia in a small American town where the water is dark and the truth is darker...

Monsters attack in 2012...

Well it's official, Tim Burton is developing a film version of the giant-monster board game Monsterpocalypse as a directing vehicle for himself, as several sites, including /Film and Dread Central, have reported...

Roy Lee will produce for Dreamworks, with frequent Burton collaborator John August writing the screenplay, while consulting Matt Wilson, who created the game. The film, which will most likely be released in 2012 in 3D, revolves around giant monsters who attack earth, and retreat after humans fight back. It is quickly discovered however, that they didn’t leave, but instead burrowed underground and are sending some sort of signal into space. The Earth prepares for a possible future attach by developing giant robots that will fight the monsters, if and when they return...

Of note to Lovecraft fans, the Lords of Cthul are among the monsters that populate the game version of
Monsterpocalypse, although it is unknown at this time whether they will see any screen time in the film...

interview with Roy Lee for more...

Joe R. Lansdale's Dread Island...

IDW will publish a new collection titled Classics Mutilated, the first of which is Dread Island, written by the great Joe R. Lansdale! According to the official press release, "Classics Mutilated offers a different take on the current monster-lit trend by challenging a coterie of major talents to twist fantasy and horror elements with classic tales and icons, creating all-new stories. Lansdale's "Dread Island" showcases the collection's unique tone by featuring Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in a new adventure, with bizarre fantasy and supernatural elements out of both H. P. Lovecraft and Uncle Remus."

"I wrote 'Dread Island' based on my love for Mark Twain," reveals Lansdale, "which collided with my interest in Lovecraft, and the fact that the Uncle Remus tales may have been the first stories I ever read. And then there were comics. I always saw 'Dread Island' as a kind of comic book in prose, the old Classics Illustrated look. That's how it played out in my head."

Look for Dread Island this October...

Official synopsis for The Thing prequel...

Check out the official synopsis for Matthijs van Heijningen's prequel to the John Carpenter classic, The Thing. The film will hit theaters on April 29, 2011...

"Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller THE THING, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish."
