Looking for Lovecraftian soundscapes for your film...

From the Unfilmable.com archives...

Then look no further than Lovecraftian composer and founder of DEAD HOUSE MUSIC Mars, a classically trained musician who specializes in dark, atmospheric music that transcends traditional horror scores. Mars has been both a musician and fan of H.P. Lovecraft for over 20 years, and has been combining his passion for both since the late 1990's...

Having composed music for the highly acclaimed Lurker Films, Mars then scored the Dreamlands-inspired animated film Shadow Of Time, and the frantic Nyarlathotep for Darkside Films. He was a featured speaker (alongside veteran composers Richard Band "Re-Animator and From Beyond") and Stephen Parsons (Rough Magik) at the 2007 H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, and has been announced as the composer for THE definitive HPL documentary "Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown" (by Wyrd Productions). Hunter's Moon casting under way...

Doug Post of Bloody Rose Productions sends word that casting is underway on Curse of the Hunter's Moon! The film started out as a remake of John H. Johnson's Curse of the Blue Lights, and originally, the storyline revolved around a group of high-school students who, despite a wave of recent disappearances, decide to throw an early Halloween party on the night of the Hunter's Moon. They are unaware, however, that Krul, one of the last ghouls, is planning to bring the Queen of the Ghouls back to life-but he needs bloody sacrifices to do so, and has a dead army to help him get them...

The new script focuses more on the Lovecraft Mythos, and will focus more on scares than the original. Shooting is scheduled for late 2009, early 2010...

People interested in learning more can contact Doug through the Bloody Rose Productions
MySpace page...

It was written by the Darkone's that some will get Lovecraft right as rain. Some will not.

My friends, before the creeping madness that devours the innards of my sanity I must confess I have discovered the former.

I cannot and will never supply the link (http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi3962176281/) that came before me as I must protect humanity from a horror so clear and profound it can only lead to the destruction of the overmind of mankind. And unbelievably it can be seen for free.

The horror must not spread. I have seen
The Book and I weep for I have seen Lovecraft channeled to almost perfection.

So convincing is the sincerity of this fine motion picture and its closeness to the Master's writings that I can only surmise the dark rituals and obscene sacrifices required to resurrect the spirit of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. A man who I know to be dead these many decades.

It is based on Lovecraft's The Book and The Descendant, stories, dear reader you will know by heart certainly. And it moves like a chilled breeze. It pulls you in like inescapable quicksand, sucking you in, entranced and weak.

I will recap the story so if you overhear it repeated in a muffled conversation you will know to run without other thought and never return to that town.

A student, one Isaac Williams visits Professor Northam with his volume of the forbidden book of the Mad Arab. I cannot utter its name or I will fall into the same panic and trauma that the elderly Professor succumbs to upon hearing its title. During the Professor's needed rest the young foolish scholar wanders the ailing man's office searching for answers to his mentor's condition. Such care while commendable is not relevant to the terror lying beneath the content of the small book filled room.

All too suddenly the young man's tooth loosens and is pulled out. What happens next is impossible. How can a tooth bleed so much blood? Has he entered another ghastly realm or had that realm now enveloped this house. Then the creatures appear. Do not, I emphatically repeat do not dabble even in jest or simple curiosity the dark writings that are forbidden to man for a reason. These two men of great intelligence and strong character remain only men. Such dark secrets are kept from the World of man in order to protect their weak and fragile nervous systems. Learn from their fatal error. And if at some party or Lovecraftian appreciation event and some fool plays this film, under no circumstances watch. And warn your associates to never watch a frame past the credits. While the talented cast and crew certainly deserve high praise for their efforts, the fate of our hero revealed at the very end will lead you to the same mental disintegrating fate as the characters and I now face.

I must go insane now. Goodbye.

Tom Sullivan reviews The Vessel...

Welcome to the Infinite Abyss...

Here is the latest installment of Tom Sullivan's Reviews of the Infinite Abyss (a feature from the old site), written exclusively for Unfilmable.com. Among his many accomplishments, Tom Sullivan is the fx legend behind Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films and was a contributing artist for Chaosium's classic role playing game The Call of Cthulhu! Tom is currently acting in a variety of films and writing a comic book mini-series called Tom Sullivan's Books of the Dead: Devilhead...

The film is: The Vessel
Short film: 25 min
Directors: Jason Voss and Robert Rundle
Writer: Jason Voss
Producers: Jason Voss and Robert Rundle
Web: http://www.aglastudio.com/vessel/

The Vessel
may not actually be a Lovecraft film. It has more satanic elements than part of the Mythos ol' H.P. dreamed up out of his complex imagination. That being said, filmmakers Voss and Rundle have done what I haven't yet, and that's make a movie.

However it seems to be an early effort and I am sure these enterprising artists see the flaws in their film as I do.

The story seems awfully familiar and sadly lacking in originality. As a learning experience that’s forgivable and I am sure they are improving with greater dept and skill.

It's about a young woman, Katrina played by Stacy Smith, who shoplifts a book from a used book store. Although the book looked kind of familiar to my Book of the Dead from Evil Dead, thankfully its original art and look are among the highlights of the film.

Katrina meets a friend, Jeff, in an abandoned building and she creates a ritual circle to summon a demon. Stacy's performance here was wonderfully energized. Although Katrina recites a number of names none of them sounded like Lovecraft Gods and the circle seems to use Latin.

Unless you are in the circle you are not protected. Her friend, Jeff, performed by Christian Hammel gets brutally murdered offstage by the demon.

I'm afraid the demon costume let's the film down. In its brief appearance it resembles the thing on the wing in that classic Twilight Zone with a paranoid William Shatner in the window seat. It sadly lacks the menace it requires and the off stage murder is done with Jeff's hands in writhing in agony from behind a doorway.

As for Katrina she learns you don't always want what you ask for.

The pacing is what really slows the enjoyment down. Long scenes of Katrina walking stop the flow of the film. Transitions are an acquired skill and I'm sure Voss and Rundle will pick it up in a future in film making I hope both follow.

While I can't recommend the film if you are looking for Lovecraft in all the right places, I want to encourage Jason and Robert to continue honing their craft. I see something there but it's not gelled yet.

Let's see more.

Army of Darkness on Blu-ray and Bruce Campbell on ED4...

Universal will release Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness on DVD (available for $19.98) and Blu-ray ($29.98) May 19th. The Screwhead Edition will include a commentary with Sam Raimi, star Bruce Campbell, and co-writer Ivan Raimi, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, additional footage, a Men Behind the Army featurette, and the theatrical trailer. The Blu-ray will include additional production photos...

In other Evil Dead news, here is what Bruce Campbell had to say about his involvement in Evil Dead 4 (via the Onion AV Club):

AVC: In your opinion, is Ash worthy of more movies?

BC: No. I think there should be an end to everything. I mean, did anyone really want Indiana Jones 4? The answer is no. I've taken a poll in about seven theaters now. Of 300 people, three hands go up. You are bound to disappoint. I would rather disappoint with a brand new original movie. People worship Army Of Darkness, and God bless them for it. It's a beautiful thing. The movie bombed when it came out, and not many people are aware of that. Twenty years later, the thing has picked up speed, and it's on American Movie Classics now. That was a long time ago, and whatever we do next will always be compared to Army Of Darkness, and I don't see how we can win. You make that movie, and I can tell you the quote right now, "Oh, it's not quite as good as Army Of Darkness." Then we would have gone through immense physical pain and anguish to bring something out that ultimately disappointed. That's really not what I'm into these days.

And after he finishes The Hobbit, he's going to do At the Mountains of Madness with us. It's going to be the definitive H.P. Lovecraft movie; Guillermo has finally convinced somebody to spend a lot of money on it. It's based on one of Lovecraft’s full-length novels, and follows it completely. The Last Battleground...

Prolific independent filmmaker Sonny Fernandez (Bleed, The Aborted) is hard at work on his latest micro-budget epic The Last Battleground...

The film follows a bunch of seemingly unconnected characters: a pair of inept hitmen, an abused girl who relies on an invisible friend to get her through rough times, a young homeless woman, and an artist who’s been noticing a change in the world around him. Their paths and others will intersect and criss-cross when one fateful night, the world comes to an end. Heaven and hell have had their ultimate showdown for control of the earth and hell has won. Where do you run when salvation no longer exists? When the dead are coming back as Lovecraftian demons manipulated by their earthly sins, when the ground has opened up to unleash unholy creatures upon the world, where do you hide? Prepare yourself for apocalyptic horror on an epic scale. The end of the world is here, there are no heroes, there is no place to survive and the last battleground is the fight for all of our souls...

"I really want to let my imagination run wild with this one. I want it to be very Lovecraftian in nature - showing things that really can't be explained. Just a lot of, "What the hell is THAT?" moments. You're seeing it, but for the life of you, you can't really explain what it exactly is. It's just a mass of bloody chaos."
