Stuart Gordon's Moscow Nightmares...

A post that has appeared on several forums around the web (all by the same person it seems) states that horror legend Stuart Gordon is developing a new film called Moscow Nightmares, that is inspired by HPL's The Hound. The project, it is said, is being developed in association with Italy's Buskin Film (s.r.l.)...

I've been unable to confirm the news, so we'll file this one under "rumor" for now. As soon as Stuart has confirmed/or denied the film, I'll let you know...

Revisiting Poe's House in 3D...

As we revealed on April 17th, Lovecraft's From Beyond could be getting the 3D treatment, but it looks like Edgar Allan Poe could beat HPL, as the authors classic tale The Fall of the House of Usher is currently being developed by Accelerator as a 3D film called The Ushers. The film, which will be shot in Canada, will star Claire Forlani, Rufus Sewell and Dougray Scott and be directed by Stephen T. Kay (Boogeyman). Shooting is scheduled for July...

See our post on May 19th, 2009 for a slightly different take on this project...

About the film: A grown brother and sister have lived in the same Martha's Vineyard house for a long time begin to feel trapped there, so they bring in a real estate broker to help them resolve their crisis...

Frank DanCoolo: Paranormal Drug Dealer...

Filmmaker Andrew W. Jones, whose animated short film The Book Dealers played the 2008 HPLFF, dropped Unfilmable.com a line to tell us about his latest film, Frank DanCoolo: Paranormal Drug Dealer, a cyberpunk parody with heavy Lovecraftian elements that is currently touring the festival circuit...

As we mentioned here,
DanCoolo screened as part of the "Lovecraftian Tales" segment at A Night of Horror Film Festival. Other screenings include the Cannes Independent Film Festival, the London Independent Film Festival, the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival, the Gasparilla Film Festival, the World of Comedy Film Festival and the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival, where it won an award for Best Short...

About the film:
In the annoyingly sparkly future-scape of Neo-Mega-Ultra Tokyo, reporter Holly Malone tracks a murderous urban legend.

She discovers that a chain of drug related killings leads down a super natural trail. A trail that ends with no average pill pusher, but FRANK DANCOOLO: PARANORMAL DRUG DEALER!

A comedy featuring a goofy blend of computer generated overkill, cartoon physics and stop-motion monsters...

Updated: Ridley Scott reveals all...

...or it sure seems that way, as he has given MTV the scoop on his forthcoming Alien prequel. Read on for more...

"As we speak, I've got a pile of pages next to me; it's like the fourth draft. It's a work in progress, but we're not dreaming it up anymore. We know what the story is. We're now actually trying to improve the three acts and make the characters better, build it up to something [we can shoot]. It's a work in progress, but we're actually making the film. There's no question about it, we're going to make the film," he tells the site. "Now it's a matter of, how good can I get the screenplay in the next few weeks so I can get a good ballpark figure of what it will cost. I've already got people working graphically on designs for the various requirements of the film. It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle — there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair. Remember that? And our man [Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas] climbs up and says "There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out — what was that?" I'm basically explaining who that Space Jockey — we call him the Space Jockey — I'm explaining who the space jockeys were."

Click here for more, including whether H.R. Giger will be involved and when it will be released...

Update: Rideley Scott has announced (see it here) that there will actually be two prequels leading up to the events in Alien, and they will indeed be in 3D...

Black Sky: World War Squid...

Comic book artist Ben Templesmith, best known for Wormwood and 30 Days of Night, is teaming up with Halo-8 on a new "Illustrated Film" called Black Sky! According to Templesmith, an illustrated film melds the cinematic storytelling style of comics with good audio/voice acting & some animation/CGI in places...

Black Sky will also be released as a traditional comic, that will be an adaptation of the original project. No release date has been announced...

Read on for more...

About the project:
So what is BLACK SKY? So far, all I can say is sort of Band Of Brothers...but with SQUID. ( Well, Cthulhu-ish ideas and my love of all things tentactular ) Yes, it's a war comic. Want to get all emotional and down and dirty with it. Not exactly comedy in the vein of Wormwood... It's post apocalyptic. I deals with a small group of soldiers, as the human race is reduced to relatively low tech solutions to claw back their planet, the new religion that drives them on to this goal in the face of hopelessness...and all the stuff that comes from such things. Many horrific and hopefully, some touching "tales from the front" in many ways. And of course, they'll end up being players in a major event that may define the now generations long conflict. Lots of action but with an actual point to it I hope, rather than an excuse to simply draw "cool" things.

Humans are such fragile things.

Squid, not so much.

From Beyond in 3D...

It's been quite a while since we've heard anything new about Shoreline Entertainment's
From Beyond, and when last we did, it was announced that it would be either a remake of Stuart Gordon's 1986 classic, or a TV series...

A quick look at Shoreline's official site didn't yield much else, but I did notice that the drop-down link listed the film as 3D Sci-Fi Action, and that my friend is something new! If done properly (if it is done at all), a 3D adaptation of
From Beyond could be a real feast for the eyes, but for now, we'll have to wait and see...

Sacrilege a ways off...

Looks like we will have to wait for Neil Marshall's Lovecraftian Western,
Sacrilege, according to a recent interview with bloody-disgusting.com...

When asked about the status of the film, Marshall said that, "
SACRILEDGE [note the spelling] is still in the cards and I need to write more, but that one's still a way off." In previous interviews, Marshall described the project as being, "Unforgiven by way of H.P. Lovecraft, with that grim, gritty setting and a horror element nobody has seen before..."

Let's hope this one isn't too far off, as Marshall is a talented director, that I'd like to see tackle Lovecraft, even if it is indirectly...

Fresh off the table: Stills from Tablets of the Gods

With principle photography in its final stretch, Tablets of the Gods is progressing well. Here are a few stills gathered from the editing table as the film starts it's initial faze of post-production this week.

AM1200

Hi. Joe Pulver chiming in . . .

I had seen AM1200 at the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & Cthulhu Con and have been a big fan of this film ever since. When Craig asked me to contribute to this site my first thought was to mention this film and again make people aware of it. The following is something I posted on The Net back in ’08. Recently I watched the film again, my 9th time, and it stays w/ me. So I want to bring it up again and hopefully make fans of this wonderful site go in search of it.

The following is what I posted a couple of years ago. My praise for this film has not diminished one iota.

Here's the facts. AM1200 is a 40 minute horror thriller written, produced and directed by award-winning DVD producer, David Prior (Zodiac, Fight Club, Master & Commander).

I had the very great pleasure of meeting director/producer David Prior at the H P Lovecraft Film Festival & Cthulhu Con last weekend. Yeah, he's got mountains of talent, but for yer old bEastie's money and better than that, this is one hell of an interesting, NICE guy! & did I mention he's got vats of talent? And as luck would have it, I got to see his stunning film AM1200. Subtlety, Atmosphere! !!, excellent acting, sound design that's about as perfect in a film as I have come across [and many of you know how addicted to the aural I am.] this film has it all in spades. From the opening tracking shot I was hooked and for 40 minutes I sat riveted to the movie screen before me.

Festival director, Andrew Migliore, said if you only see one film at the festival this is it, and boy was he was right! !! Those of you who know me well know I'm not big on horror films. I have grown weary of buckets of blood and cheap over the top frights. Engage my mind and you'll win my heart! That said, this one hooked me deep. And if it can lure me in, I'm betting this finely crafted thriller will grab you as well.

You also know how much I hate spoilers, so here's a brief description of this engrossing film. Investment analyst Sam Larson [played by Eric Lange – what a performance! 2 bEastly paws way up!!] has a lot on his mind. After a financial scam goes horribly wrong, he hits the road in a desperate bid to outrun his guilt. A fragment of a radio broadcast, that may be a distress call, lures him to an isolated transmitting station and into a terrifying mystery of murder, madness and the insatiable hunger of a power beyond his comprehension. I'm not going to go into any more details than stated there –get yer paws on this and see for yourself. For all the info you need, zip over to http://am1200.com/ and watch the trailer. As Eric Burdon once said, "It will be worth it."

David Prior offered to give me a copy of his film, but I felt so strongly about what I had just seen—experienced, I dashed [I'm not kidding about hot-footing it to grab one of these] to the dealers room and bought one. This film needs to be supported by every one who loves dark films. And don't take my word for it, director David Fincher [can ya say SE7EN, or ZODIAC, or FIGHT CLUB?] said, "David Prior, in 40 short minutes, shows why he is the single most promising director I've seen in years." And Del Toro loves Prior's work, so what else to you need to know? Get yer paws on this horror thriller! !!

That’s it. I think it will be hard to find a copy of this DVD, but I urge everyone to root around Ebay, ask in forums, or beg a friend who may have been one the lucky ones to get a copy, and find a way to see this superb film.

All my bEastly best! !!

Joe

The Thing prequel underway...

Matthijs Van Heijningen's prequel to The Thing is a week into its
Toronto shoot
, and ShockTillYouDrop.com caught up with lead actor Joel Edgerton, who discussed how much the film ties into the Carpenter classic. Check out some of what he had to say below, and head over to Shock for more...

"Well, it's a prequel and definitely the Norwegian base is modeled on the base you see in the Carpenter film," he told the site, "Being a prequel you'll see a lot of tie-ins as to how the base comes to be the way it is in the Carpenter film, being so destroyed, and that evidence you see in the Carpenter film, We'll get a glimpse into that. It's great because you have a bunch of people behind making it—Eric Newman and Marc (Abraham), the producers at Strike (Entertainment), those guys and Matthijs the director, they have such respect for the original film that they're not trying to do a remake, they're just trying to pay homage to the original and also do the right thing with what I think is a real cool way in to doing that, and revisiting the material."
