The King of Death is coming...

A film that might be worth keeping an eye on is Peter Briggs's Mortis Rex (I first found the film under the H.P. Lovecraft keyword on the IMDb)... set in 122 AD; the story revolves around Cassius Virius, a disgraced Roman war hero who is sent to Scotland to team up with Syrus Petronius, the washed-up commander of the Roman fort of Briga Magna on Hadrian's Wall. Briga Magna has been suffering a spate of inexplicable deaths, which Cassius suspects is connected to the local hostile Druid populace, who may be readying another rebellion. What he actually uncovers is much more deadly and horrifying...

Written by Briggs (co-screenwriter of Hellboy), who will also direct, the $25-30m creature feature is scheduled for production later this year, with casting currently underway...

"As a former cinematographer, and as a screenwriter writing on some of the most memorable Hollywood tent-pole horror and sci-fi franchises of recent years," Briggs tells bloody-disgusting.com, "I've used that to shape Mortis Rex into a highly accessible piece of entertainment: by turns both an action-packed thrill-ride and equally a scary, heart stopping nail-biter. Working with Intandem and their expertise in film finance and sales I'm excited about the potential of the film."

Creature concepts from the Black Lagoon...

Fangoria.com received an exclusive look at some FX concepts from the on-again, off-again Creature from the Black Lagoon remake from FX artist Vincent Guastini today. While it's unknown whether or not the film will even happen, it does give some indication of what direction the remake was going in...

"At this moment, I have some idea which direction they're going in, but as of now, it's still ongoing and we'll have to see what the outcome of this will be. These are my ideas that are both traditional and freshened up, without destroying the classic original."

Image Gallery: The Miskatonic Acid Test...

The Miskatonic Acid Test, a film chronicling the 1969 "happening", where "music and atmosphere could combine to create an alteration of consciousness", is getting closer to seeing the psychedelic light of day, according to American Entropy's Dark Lord Rob. Recently, a single-disc compilation containing the best songs from the soundtrack (including A History of the Arkham Sound) was made available for download (which you can get for free here)...

Rob tells Unfilmable.com that, "The Arkham Sound was the name given by the local press to the short lived psychedelic music scene that thrived in the Arkham area in the mid-to-late 60's, including bands such as The Conqueror Wyrms and The Plasma Miasma. The soundtrack compiles various rare singles from Arkham's best bands with actual live tracks from the infamous Miskatonic Acid Test from October 1969, taken from the recovered footage that comprises the movie."

As for the film itself, post-production continues with FX work currently underway, and Rob hopes to have the film ready for release in early 2010. The Miskatonic Acid Test, shot in Freak-o-Rama, stars Erika Dyer, Sam Cohan, Jonathan Silver, Chris Lobdell, Emily Griffin, Shawn French, John Joyce and features the music of The Barrow Wights, The Gyre Falcons, The Plasma Miasma, Byron Fenris and more...

Stuart Gordon enters a new house...

Now that House of Re-Animator is no more and The Thing on the Doorstep seems to have stalled, bloody-disgusting.com reports (via TrackingB.com) that Stuart Gordon has set his sights on directing a film adaptation of William Hope Hodgson's The House on the Borderland. Written by David Benullo, the story revolves around a family that relocates to a relative's rural home only to discover it guards the border between our dimension and another which is inhabited by a race of hostile creatures...

Lovecraft had this to say of the novel in his essay, Supernatural Horror In Literature:

"The House on the Borderland (1908) -- perhaps the greatest of all Mr. Hodgson's works -- tells of a lonely and evilly regarded house in Ireland which forms a focus for hideous otherworld forces and sustains a siege by blasphemous hybrid anomalies from a hidden abyss below. The wanderings of the Narrator's spirit through limitless light-years of cosmic space and Kalpas of eternity, and its witnessing of the solar system's final destruction, constitute something almost unique in standard literature. And everywhere there is manifest the author's power to suggest vague, ambushed horrors in natural scenery. But for a few touches of commonplace sentimentality this book would be a classic of the first water."

However, instead of stones, they find the Gate: a hidden underground chamber that holds the secret of centuries and the vengeance of eternity. Recent DVD releases...

Here are a couple of recently released DVDs that slithered under my radar...

Shadows in the Garden (7th Anniversary Edition)

Written and directed by Wayne Spitzer, Shadows in the Garden is a "re-coming" of age story about a Shadow that has come to the coastal town of Cthulhu Gardens, a butcher dubbed "Cutthroat Cthulhu", who leaves decapitated corpses in his wake -- including, it is feared, the town's own "Sheriff". Yet there are whispers of a new Shadow, a monstrous Other, a thing sharing the Garden's own likeness...

Originally released in 2002, the film stars Eric Gollinger, Andy Kumpon, Diana Spitzer and Wayne Spitzer as the monster, Sylkk. Released in April, the 25 minute DVD retails for $14.95...

Strange Occurrence in Bayside

Writer/director Marc Charles Cancassi's short film revolves around what happens when a town attempts to cover-up some strange and supernatural occurrences in it's own backyard. According to Marc Charles Cancassi, who also stars, the film contains "obvious references here and there to Lovecraft" and nearly every saucer movie from the 50's...

About the film: Two hometown boys, Tom Hilly (your working class hero) and Pete Shelly (the typical quirky conspiracy buff dude) examine what may be not only a UFO cover-up but a possible conspiracy between our own government and the actual aliens themselves...

Strange Occurrence in Bayside was released in April and retails for $14.99. You can view the official trailer here...

The rise of the Yithians...

Unfilmable.com has learned that Swedish filmmaker/stop-motion animator Richard Svensson is hard at work on an untitled "Yithian Stop-Motion Project" inspired by one of Lovecraft's greatest stories, The Shadow out of Time. According to the filmmaker, the film will focus on the history of the Yithians and their war and subsequent destruction by the flying polyps...

No stranger to Lovecraft, Richard has already completed two films inspired by the works of HPL, Eye of Evil and Concerning Brown Jenkin
(an adaptation of a portion of the text from The Dreams in the Witch House), and has several examples of his Lovecraftian artwork exhibited on his Elfwood gallery. You can find more of his stop-motion and live action films, including Jabberwocky and Goblin Wood, on his Lone Animator YouTube page...

Richard has already designed and created one of the Yithian's (see image below) and is currently working on the flying polyps. "It's taking quite a while to animate the Yithians (tendrils and all) but they look very weird moving about and I hope people will find the sight interesting," Richard tells Unfilmable.com, "Lovecraft's "Gods" are certainly a challenge for any puppet maker, but one that I relish. They do make for something extraordinary to watch, if you manage to pull them off."

For more examples of Richard's amazing work (including a "Dagon monster mask"), visit loneanimator.com and loneanimator.blogspot.com...
