The End is Nigh (a reminder)...

The 15th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and CthulhuCon starts tomorrow, and its an event not to be missed (although Unfilmable.com will be missing it again this year)! New films added to the 2010 schedule include the short Poe film Darkness There and Stuart Gordon's (who will also be in attendance) Dagon...

Sarah Covert's excellent site She Never Slept will be providing live broadcasts (courtesy of Alanna Quinn) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8PM (Pacific), as well as Twitter updates throughout the event, so flop on over to sheneverslept.com for updates...

The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival promotes the works of H.P. Lovecraft, literary horror, and weird tales through the cinematic adaptations by professional and amateur filmmakers. The festival was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore in the hope that H.P. Lovecraft would be rightly recognized as a master of gothic horror and his work more faithfully adapted to film and television...

IT'S SO FLUFFAY!

For those of you who insist on some cuddliness in your Old Ones, yet another Cthulhu Plushie is being released, this time by Squishable. They seem to specialize in cute stuffed animals, and somehow have discovered the Ancient One as an inspiration.

The Green Slime!

I'm unsure how many of you are fans of classic Sci Fi, but one film fans have always waited for is The Green Slime

In this odd collaboration by Japan, Italy, and the United States, a huge meteor is on a collision course with earth and astronauts are sent to take care of it. But one of them carries some green slime back unknowingly, and it turns into a horrible tentacled monster, which quickly multiplies into a horde when it's discovered any form of energy causes it to replicate. A somewhat Lovecraftian plot, but it's more suited towards fans of Sci-Fi B-movies from the 50's and 60's.

Warner Brothers has announced it will be available via their Warner Archives next month. For those who don't know, the Warner Archives is a service in which you can choose a film from the list and they'll burn and mail a DVD to you. It's mostly older films they don't think would be a commercial success to release on DVD, which can be sucky if the print they use to make it with is rough. But it's the only way to get access to most of those films without buying a bootleg or foreign disc.

New Mythos game in the works...

Latina Estúdio is developing a new game based on the works of HPL called Mythos! The game, which takes place in an eerie parallel world, full of horrors and mystery, revolves around Randolph Carter, an adventurer and mystic who knows forbidden magic and lore, and who will fight with all his might to impede the resurrection of the Great Cthulhu, a brutal deity that desires not to govern the world, but merely to destroy it...

New Shadow Out of Time artwork and update...

Richard Svensson and Daniel Lennéer, filmmakers who most recently worked together on Terror from the Abyss (watch it here), are collaborating on an adaptation of Lovecraft's masterpiece The Shadow Out of Time! According to Richard, aka The Lone Animator, he and Daniel were both working on their own versions of the story (we previously reported on Richard's untitled "Yith" project here), when they decided to join forces and tackle the story together...

Richard also sent along some incredible "production art" revealing a showdown between a Yithian and a Flying Polyp. Interestingly, the background is a 2D image created from photos of ceramic tiles...

The film is currently in the pre-production phase, but Richard says that they hope to shoot later this year...

Quoth Cthulhu: Guillermo del Toro (updated)...

It's been awhile since my last Quoth Cthulhu, so what better way to bring it back than with quotes from del Toro about At the Mountains of Madness. The following quotes came from the TimesTalks series at New York City’s TimesCenter...

"We've been designing for the last 3-weeks. It's being produced by James Cameron, who's been a friend for 20-years. We have avoided working together until the time came for the right project. Obviously, the difference between the novella and the movie is that Lovecraft had a gift for making everything specifically ambiguous. He would say 'the leering face loaded with madness,’ or 'the evil perverse entity of unnamable'… everything was unnamable, indescribable. When you're reading you go,'Whoa!' your brain fills those spaces. For every creature, everyone has a secret mental image of what those creatures look like. It's going to be impossible to please everyone."

"I've been thinking of those monsters for twenty years. Fortunately for me no one has done monsters like the ones I'm doing. In all the movies ever made there's never been monsters like the ones we're doing. About two weeks ago we were visited by Dennis Muren. He looked at the designs, and he turned to us and said, 'No one has seen monsters like this ever.' I was like, [boyish grin] 'Yeah!' I was happy and vindicated and all that. All I'm telling you is to me some of these monsters are more real than many of my cousins. [laughs] I mean, I have to point to them when we're at dinner, [whispers] 'who's that, Pedro? PEDRO!' But monsters I know what they had for lunch, for dinner, the biological condition, where they come from. I know all these questions because I live with them in my mind all the time."

- Guillermo del Toro

Check out Shock Till You Drop for more...

Update: This isn't really new, but MTV (via Shock Till You Drop) is reporting that Ron Perlman (Hellboy) will play the role of Larson, as long as he's available. Read on for more...

"All I can tell you is if Ron Perlman is free, he will be in. I wrote a part for him. He read it and if everything falls in place, Ron Perlman has a role in it written specifically for him."

"Larson, the sort of dog guy, the guy that cares for the dogs and the sled — the part of the expedition that is dog sleds. It's a fantastic character. I really love him. He's sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn't care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man, and it is written specifically for him."

The End is Nigh...

The beginning of October is fast approaching and with it, the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival! I've been covering the festival for some time now, and even attended a few, but as I've reported, this will be the last festival in Portland, Oregon (at least for now)...

I won't be attending this year, but if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend that you do so! The festival is an amazing time, and you'll see films there that you probably won't see anywhere else...

A quick look at the HPLFF website shows that a few more features and shorts have been added since my last update, so here they are (along with a fancy graphic provided by Sarah L. Covert)...

Features:

Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro
Primal by Josh Reed

Shorts:

A Pleasing Terror - Canon Albreic's Scrap-Book by Stephen Featherstone
Alice Jacobs is Dead by Alex Horwitz
AM1200 by David Prior (a returning favorite)
Derailed by Nicolas Simonin

Another Comic!

I know I said the next article would be on cosmic horror films, but I'm still researching for it and I came across this:

Arcana Comics is releasing Poe & Phillips an adventure set in an alternate universe where Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Phillips Lovecraft are supernatural investigators. Might not be everyone's cup or tea but the idea is interesting nonetheless.

At the Mountains of Madness not green lit...

Deadline.com, the site that broke the news that James Cameron was joining AtMoM, are reporting (via an interview with Guillermo del Toro) that the project has yet to receive a green light...

"...I wanted to be shooting by June next year. I didn't want to let another year go by without shooting, it made no sense. So Jim, Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini, came with me for that big meeting. Jim and I were able to do a double tag team, talking about the world and the experience that Mountains would be. We found new ways for them to see it, and they agreed to investigate it further," del Toro tells the site. "We are not green lit, we are still budgeting and designing, and we are partners on this. I believe in my heart we are going to be making this movie in June of next year."

HPLFF Portland announces more films...

A few more short films have been added to the Portland HPLFF schedule, and founder Andrew Migliore has confirmed that this will be the last year (at least for now) for the Portland fest...

Call of C'thulu and Dunwich (both part of Project Space Squid), Effulgence (by Jeremy Peterson), Fyren (Keeper of the Light) by Robert P. Olsson and To My Mother and Father (by Can Evrenol) have been added to the 2010 fest, which takes place October 1-3...

Below is Andrew's message in its entirety...

"
Yes the rumors are true... I am retiring (or going on sabbatical for awhile). I have been running this festival for 15 years and am out of sanity points. So what does this mean? Well Aaron Vanek has started a satellite festival in LA which will become an annual event. The Portland event is in limbo until I can find someone to replace me. We may have another satellite festival in Seattle and perhaps Austin. Regardless, I will always remain the founder... and the festival will live on and grow. So let us all celebrate H.P. and have a blast this October. cheers"

Los Angeles Lovecraft fest today...

Just a reminder...

The historic Warner Grand Theatre will host the Los Angeles incarnation of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival today and tickets are still available! Plus filmmakers galore! Guests include Andrew Migliore (founder of the Portland fest) and the directors of all six films, Stuart Gordon, Frank Woodward, David Prior, Bryan Moore, John Strysik and Andrew Leman & Sean Branney...

Plotdigger Films spawns an evil from beyond...

While doing my routine scan of the web for all things Lovecraftian, I ran across news of Plotdigger Films upcoming project Alarming. Early poster art portrays the film as an interesting looking creature feature, but newer artwork makes the film look a little more, shall we say, cosmic! Currently in the script stage, production is scheduled for late 2010 with Ryan Nicholson directing and J.R. Boos writing...

According to information gathered from the Plotdigger forum, the story revolves around a cursed patch of land which harbours an eldritch evil older than time itself -- until a greedy land developer moves in on its territory and unleashes hell on earth, and the film promises disgusting mutations, zombies, larvae, tentacle rape, explosions, monster-on-monster kaiju fights and more...

About the film: For security guard Dale Wallenchuk and his co-workers, it starts as a regular assignment: a cushy job at a construction site for a luxury condo development on the edge of town. But there's something sinister in the nearby swamp, and now workers are going missing, turning up dead -- or worse. The natives say the land is cursed, haunted by an eldritch nightmare. A depraved and disgusting creature, driven to kill, to feed... and to spawn. It's blood and ooze by the barrel as Dale and his crew go toe-to-tentacle with an evil older than time. If an alarm goes off in the forest... will anyone be alive to hear it?

As always, watch this space for more...

Yellow Kings and Darker Things...

For Immediate Release:

"The King in Yellow cordially invites you to an evening of blackmail, madness, and murder..."

Celebrate the Halloween season in a double-bill of spine-tingling tales from two of the Twin Cities' masters of the macabre!
Death and the deathless. Dragon shadows. Wolf dreams and time machines. Your biological clock is ticking, and founding Rockstar Storyteller phillip low has plenty to say about it in this cabaret of macabre sketches and stories. Quantum Suicide and Other Songs of Death: fondly dedicated to everyone who is drying. Especially you. (WARNING: This show contains profanity.)

It is said that the play The King in Yellow is a strange story of such decayed debauchery, that those who read its virulent pages will fall to insanity. Welcome to a futuristic 1920 that never came to pass, a desolate world imagined by Robert W. Chambers in 1895. Unhappy with this world? Never fear, a Lethal Chamber has just been opened at Washington Square for your suicidal convenience. Tim Uren brings you an alternate future that's already past in a new adaptation of The Repairer of Reputations.

"Yellow Kings and Darker Things" will be taking place at the People's Center Theater, 425 20th Avenue South, Minneapolis.

Maximum Verbosity has won acclaim with performances at such varied venues as the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, Spirit in the House, FoolFest, and the DC, Indianapolis, Iowa, and Kansas City Fringe Festivals -- even as far as Melbourne, Australia. At the 2007 Minnesota Fringe, Descendant of Dragons was the best-selling show in its venue, while in 2009 The Rise of General Arthur was nominated for Best Spoken Word Performance by FringeFamous.

"[Quantum Suicide] exhibited just about every one of my favorite dynamics of good spoken word performance...a beautiful piece about quantum mechanics and love, time and mistakes, without losing the audience once...the writing was tight, the pace was perfect, and the writer engaged the audience in a smooth and engrossing style."

- Cole Sara, Minnesota Microphone

"Horror is difficult to pull off on stage, but Tim Uren...makes easy work of the complex, overheated prose, creating a vivid and compelling sense of dread."

- Alan Berks, Minnesota Playlist

Mountains of Madness, another opinion...

The following information was taken from the comment section for September 4th. Keep in mind that I have no idea who wrote this, or whether or not they have read the most current [completed] draft of the script. I am only posting this for those of you who may have missed it...

Beware, there be spoilers ahead...

I've read the script, the latest one*.There was no cheese and no campiness. Everything on display is deadly serious and highly Lovecraft. Del Toro has captured all the elements but done so through his own unique vision. The script is breath taking in its horror and action packed at times but everything takes place in under an incredible and very present atmosphere of dread. And yes the atmosphere is palapable on every page. It is not a Hollywood film, it is a chilling vision of AtMoM done on a fairly epic scale, that DOES hold true to the story, incredibly so, while also allowing the work to be more accesible to the public at large. That last bit sounds bad, but after reading the script I went back and studied the original text at length. The only real difference is that Del Toro chooses to show us the sights of Antartica instead of having us witness them through radio broadcasts etc. And if you think about it, that is truly the only way to actually adapt Lovecraft to film. You have to give the unknowable a shape. You have to at least provide the audience a glimpse from which they can build their terror and he does that here, and will do that in the film I am sure. Finally, he actually gives us characters that we can relate to. In the original text that is possibly the only thing lacking. Lovecraft almost never gave us characters that we cared for other than the narrator. They simply served a function to the plot and helped it move along, the narrator is what matters. In the script you are given just enough development of all the characters to care about them to the point where you are involved in their lives. You feel for the narrator but you also care for his friends and revile his enemies. It makes the lurking horror and oppresive dread on display that much more intense. You know what is going to happen here, but you can't help but feel each and every terrible thing that happens and progressively become more and more fearful as the story goes on. I feel no need to delve into details about the script and I hope that this comment helps to alleviate some of the trepidation that the poorly written review by Temple of Ghoul has obviously left you with. Trust in Del Toro, he knows what he's doing and more importantly he knows Lovecraft**.

*I have an incredible source near to the material. I was allowed time with but not granted a script.
** See the documentary that you promoted here yourself not too long ago. Lovcraft: Fear of the Unknown (I may have mis-typed the title, but I dod own and have seen the doc itself.)If anyone can pull this off it is Guillermo Del Toro.

"Jim's raised the bar, and I've got to jump to it," Ridley told the site. "He's not going to get away with it. The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"

Sounds Lovecraftian to me...

More News about MoM

And I wish it sounded more promising. I sent these links to Craig tonight, but I couldn't wait to post them because I was curious to see what people thought:

MoviesBlog mentioning a script review of MoM: http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/08/30/at-the-mountains-of-madness-script-review-appears-online/

And here is the review itself: http://templeofghoul.blogspot.com/2010/08/at-mountains-of-madness-script-review.html

As you can see above if you scroll down far enough the review is supposed to be for a leaked script that was fake (and that Lawyers supposedly had Twitch Film take it down).

Some part of me is upset...I was hoping for this film to finally be a solid adaptation of a Lovecraft story without any cheese or campiness.
